“Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.”
— Anthony J. D’Angelo
As one of the world’s great public research universities, we believe UCLA has a responsibility to graduate transformative leaders who will meet the challenges of a fast-changing world. We want our College Scholars graduates not only to be able to adapt to the world, but also to change it. By definition, those leaders will be adept at communicating effectively with others from diverse backgrounds, building bridges by facilitating collaborations in pursuit of solving complex problems, and influencing individuals and organizations in the face of rapid change while retaining a sense of social and personal responsibility.
We take a lifetime perspective on learning and view undergraduate education as a providing critical opportunity for internalizing the value of active learning. We embrace a learner-centered framework for engaging undergraduates; one in which we want you to feel empowered to take ownership of your learning, inspired to chart a personally meaningful degree path, and committed to sharing generously your talents and experiences.
what’s the goal?
Ultimately, we want your participation in the College Scholars Program to transform your UCLA learning experience. Through your required and elective honors coursework and experiential engagements, we support you in developing skills that will help you thrive at UCLA and beyond; explore in greater depth selected interdisciplinary interests and associated learning opportunities, and apply your knowledge, skills, and abilities within real-world contexts as you construct your portfolio and complete your capstone project.
The “College Honors” designation on your diploma will be synonymous with having successfully completed a rigorous academic and co-curricular program that has challenged you to think and act creatively, appreciate the value of diverse perspectives, wrestle with creating innovative solutions to real-world problems, engage in an evolving process of self-discovery, collaborate and communicate effectively, and contribute actively to community wellbeing. Toward these ends, we endorse the value of interdisciplinary learning that is complemented by experiential, integrative, and illustrative components.
